Food and Drink

Two years at GM place as a grunt for selling lemonade, donuts and cotton candy.  A year and a half at an Indian banquet hall.  6 bloody years at UBC's Sage Bistro. Go and eat there, by the way.

Sage Bistro

Countless family get-togethers at Chinese Canadian restaurants.

Mango pudding fish
Dim Sum...Yum

Gorging myself with all you can eat sushi at band dinners.  Even more countless casual and sometimes fine dining excursions from Kitsilano to Surrey with various people I know.

Tea snob.

Basement wine maker.

The patient art of mead making.

And thanks to my extended family in Toronto and Paris, I'm a weekend oenophile and wine collector.

My "collection" of fine BC wines. They're empty bottles now...except for that Occulus.

...and thanks to my cousin Allan and my recent trip to Cancun, I'm beginning to have the occasional affinity for a single malt scotch whisky and tequila.  In responsible moderation, of course.  And not in mixed drinks, but with a touch of water for scotch, or salt and lime for tequila.  When it comes to spirits, I'm pretty old-mannish.  Red wine with dinner, Earl Grey tea with dessert, and a whisky as a finale.

I think I've earned the title of "foodie," although I'm not liking that term since it alludes to the image of a prissy, condescending jerk who thinks he's better than thou and probably can't cook for himself.  Sounds like a guy that deserves a good thrashing.  I guess I'm not a foodie after all.  But, like many Vancouverites, I have a passion for good drinks and better eats.

I'll bring that passion to China with me, and plot out my gastronomical journey through the PRC on this blog.  Watch my updates on the home page from time to time.  They might concern a great place to eat in China, or a gross encounter with baijiu kind.  I can't wait to eat at these places, and so can't my drooling mouth.
